Avoiding Motorcycle-Motorcycle Collisions

While motorcycle accidents involving cars or larger vehicles tend to come to mind most often, motorcycle-motorcycle collisions are also within the realm of possibility. So, whether you’re venturing out solo or with a group of fellow riders, it’s important to be aware of other bikers and to follow riding etiquette rules. Brad Tabakin, New Jersey motorcycle collision lawyer and founder of Bikers Have Rights motorcycle safety/community forum, is here to share a few tips on sharing the road with other motorcyclists.

Avoiding Motorcycle-Motorcycle Collisions

  • Take care to maintain an appropriate following distance behind other motorcycles/vehicles based on the weather conditions. In fair weather, stay at least one second/motorcycle length behind others, and double that in inclement weather.
  • If riding with a group, cap the number of riders at a reasonable limit (around seven max) so it doesn’t become difficult to stay together and see each other’s signals.
  • For standard highway or suburban riding, stagger your formation so riders alternate which side of the lane they’re traveling in, with the leader at the front left. On curvier roads or if visibility is limited, consider switching to a single-file riding orientation.
  • Plan your route ahead of time, and make sure everyone in your party is on the same page about where you’re going, how you’ll signal to each other if needed, what to do if you get separated, etc.

To keep your motorcycle rides enjoyable and uneventful, New Jersey motorcycle collision lawyer Brad Tabakin recommends implementing these strategies.
