If you or someone you love is a motorcycling enthusiast, then you may have heard that motorcycle accidents tend to spike in the summertime. An uptick in traffic on the roads combined with hot weather and storms can indeed raise the likelihood of motorcycle accidents in New Jersey and across the US. Thus, it’s more important than ever to ride with care during this season. Sadly, incidents can affect even the most proactive motorcyclists, so being aware of your rights in case of a collision is also key. Today, NJ motorcycle attorney and Bikers Have Rights motorcycle safety awareness group founder Brad Tabakin will share strategies to protect yourself and your rights when motorcycling this summer.
Avoiding Summer Motorcycle Accidents
Here are a few summer cycling safety reminders, courtesy of NJ motorcycle attorney Brad Tabakin:
- Don’t skip inspections and preventative maintenance – Making sure your bike is ready for seasonal conditions like heavy rain and very hot weather is essential for safe riding. Steps like having your tires rotated, having your lights and tire tread checked and having the oil changed as recommended can go miles to decrease your risk of a bike malfunction-related accident.
- Stay focused – Distracted driving can be catastrophic when operating any type of vehicle, including a motorcycle. So, familiarize yourself with your planned route before setting out, and keep your phone in a secure place where you won’t be tempted to use it. If you have a passenger, encourage them to limit interactions to only what’s necessary until you’ve reached your destination.
- Know when to pull over – Summertime in New Jersey is notorious for thunderstorms that come on quickly. Before getting on your bike, check the forecast to see if adverse weather is predicted. Try to avoid riding in inclement weather whenever possible, and seek shelter promptly if you find yourself caught in a storm.
