What’s Included in My Motorcycle Insurance Policy?
Laws in most states require riders to carry motorcycle insurance. While there are exceptions to the rule, if you’re a biker in either New Jersey or Pennsylvania, you must purchase a basic policy meeting these states’ minimum limits.
For example, in New Jersey, your insurance policy must include at least $5,000 for property damage and $10,000 to cover the injuries per accident. However, experts recommend bulking up your coverage by including $15,000 to cover injuries per person and $30,000 for injuries per accident.
Keep in mind that even if you already carry insurance for your car, this coverage does not extend to your motorcycle as your bike has a higher risk profile. However, many insurers offer seasonal coverage to riders, which is useful if you only make use of your motorcycle during the warmer months.
Which Features Aren’t Included in My Motorcycle Insurance Policy?
A basic policy will almost always fall short covering costs stemming from an accident. Hence why most riders choose to purchase additional features. Here are a few addons that aren’t included in a basic policy that you should consider purchasing:
- Collision Coverage: Kicks in to cover any damage your motorcycle sustained in a collision with another vehicle or object.
- Comprehensive Coverage: Reimburses you for damage caused by non-collision events, such as theft, vandalism, hail, and more.
- Personal Injury Protection: Covers medical costs for injuries you or your passengers suffered in a crash regardless of whether you were at fault or not. However, due to the added risk associated with riding, many providers do not offer this feature to motorcyclists.
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Covers damages and injuries stemming from an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.
