Pennsylvania Motorcycle Helmet Laws
In Pennsylvania, you (and your passengers) are required to wear protective headgear at all times unless:
- You are over the age of 21; and
- Have at least two years of riding experience; or
- Have completed a biking safety course approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or local Department of Transportation.
Take note: You are not required to wear a helmet when operating a three-wheeled motorcycle or a motorcycle equipped with an enclosed cab. Headgear must meet standards set out by the national Department of Transportation, and adherence to these standards must be indicated by displaying a “DOT” sticker on the outside of your helmet. Additionally, the name of the manufacturer, size of the helmet, model designation, and date the helmet was manufactured must be listed somewhere on your headgear.
Lane Splitting Laws
In many states, splitting lanes—whereby a motorcyclist drives in the space between two slow or stopped cars in separate lanes moving in the same direction—is considered to be the safest way to maneuver through traffic. This is not the case in Pennsylvania, where lane sharing, or lane splitting, is illegal.
