In general, those who are 16 years of age or older can potentially qualify for a motorcycle license in Pennsylvania. Before a motorcyclist can get a full license, they will need to pass a skills test administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles. The motorcycle skills test evaluates whether a rider can safely control a motorcycle in real-world conditions. Administered by PennDOT, the test typically includes exercises such as tight turns, figure-eights, quick stops, swerving to avoid hazards, and proper lane positioning. Riders must demonstrate smooth clutch and throttle control, balance at low speeds, and safe braking techniques.
The examiner scores performance based on control, observation, and adherence to instructions. Successful completion of the test, or an approved safety course waiver, qualifies the applicant for a Class M motorcycle license.
When you have a motorcycle license, you must register your bike with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Before you can do this, you need proof that you already have motorcycle insurance. This is an ongoing requirement that you must meet so long as you continue to ride. If you do not have insurance, your registration can be suspended until you are able to provide this proof.
